How to renew a Colombian passport in Los Angeles
Informational guide · Always confirm details on the official portal
The Colombian passport is processed in person at the consulate, by appointment. Below are the usual requirements, the approximate cost, how to book the appointment, and delivery times.
Who can apply?
Any Colombian citizen may apply for or renew their passport at the consulate that covers their jurisdiction. The Consulate of Colombia in Los Angeles has historically served residents of Southern California, Arizona and New Mexico. Confirm your jurisdiction before booking.
Colombian passport requirements
- Valid Colombian ID (yellow cédula de ciudadanía with holograms). For minors, the civil birth registration or the identity card.
- An appointment booked in the official system.
- Payment of the current consular fee (see below).
- In-person attendance of the holder for the biometric photo and signature. Minors must attend with their parents or representative.
Minors and special cases (first passport, change of data, loss or theft) may require additional documents. Check the current official list before your appointment.
Step by step
- Confirm your identity and jurisdiction. Make sure your cédula is valid and that Los Angeles is your consulate.
- Book the appointment online using the Foreign Ministry's official appointment system. If no slots are available, check again at different times — slots are released periodically. See our appointments guide.
- Pay the consular fee by the method the consulate indicates and keep the receipt. See the fees guide.
- Attend your appointment. Arrive on time with your documents. Your photo, fingerprints and signature are taken there.
- Collect your passport. The passport is produced in Colombia and delivered at the consulate. You'll be told the date and method of delivery.
Approximate cost
The passport fee (ordinary or executive) is set by the Government of Colombia in U.S. dollars and updated periodically. For that reason we don't publish a fixed figure: check the current amount in the consular fees guide or directly on the official portal before paying.
Delivery times
Because the passport is printed in Colombia and shipped to the consulate, delivery is not immediate. Times vary with demand and shipping logistics. Ask at your appointment for the estimated timeframe and how you'll be notified.
Frequently asked questions
Can I renew the passport by mail?
The passport requires in-person biometric capture (photo, fingerprints and signature), so it generally can't be done by mail. Confirm any exceptions on the official portal.
I lost my passport — what do I do?
In case of loss or theft you can request a new one; a statement of the event is usually required. Verify the exact steps with the consulate or the official portal.
Do I need a valid cédula?
Yes. The passport is issued based on your Colombian ID. If your cédula is expired or lost, look into the cédula process as well.
Does this site book the appointment or process the passport?
No. We are an independent informational resource. The appointment and the process are carried out only through the official Government of Colombia channels.
